The limitation is equally important. The benefit was specific to divergent thinking. On convergent tasks requiring a single correct answer, walking did not help and in some conditions hurt. This is a finding about idea generation, not about thinking in general, and the popular version routinely drops that distinction.
What Might Be Happening
The brain network most often invoked here is the default mode network, a set of regions more active during rest and internally directed thought than during externally focused tasks. It has been associated with mind-wandering, autobiographical memory, and imagining the future.
The proposed story is that low-demand activity allows this network to engage, permitting the loose associative recombination that generates unexpected connections. It is a plausible hypothesis and it is regularly overstated. The omission is more instructive. Every one of these people had spent years immersed in the problem before the moment they are remembered for. Poincaré wrote about this himself with more precision than his popularizers: he described the sudden insight as arriving after long periods of conscious work, and considered the unconscious phase useless without it. Kekulé had been working on molecular structure for years.
The stories get told as though the bath or the dream produced the idea. The people involved generally described it the other way: the preparation produced the idea, and the bath was where it surfaced. That is a less marketable claim and it matches the research better.
Mind-Wandering, Without the Romance
Mind-wandering has been recast in recent years from a failure of attention to a creative resource. Both framings are partial.
Research consistently associates mind-wandering with worse performance on tasks requiring sustained attention, which is not surprising: the mind is elsewhere. A widely discussed study also reported that people's momentary happiness was lower when their minds wandered than when they were engaged with the present, independent of the pleasantness of the activity.
Meanwhile, other work associates mind-wandering with incubation benefits and with planning. Both bodies of evidence are real. The resolution is that mind-wandering is not one thing with one value: whether it helps depends entirely on what you were trying to do, and drifting during a meeting is not the same phenomenon as drifting on a walk after a hard problem.
What This Suggests in Practice
Do the work first. Loading the problem is the non-optional step. Incubation without prior engagement is just a walk.
Then leave it, genuinely. Low-demand activity is the condition with support: walking, showering, washing dishes. A phone is not low-demand; it is a different task.
Carry a capture method. The reason ideas seem to arrive and vanish is that they do. Any reliable capture beats trusting recall.
Expect divergence, not resolution. The evidence supports more and more varied ideas, not better single answers. Convergent work still happens at the desk.

Where an Audio Program Fits
Audio programs marketed for creativity or mental clarity typically use brainwave entrainment, with gamma frequencies invoked because gamma oscillations are associated with perceptual binding and attention in neuroscience literature.
The invocation is where the reasoning breaks. Gamma activity being associated with cognitive processes does not establish that inducing a gamma-frequency response through audio produces those processes. That inference runs backward from correlation to cause, and the trials that would test it directly are small, short, inconsistent, and difficult to blind because participants can hear the intervention.
