Research & Citation Standards

This page describes how information is researched, which sources we rely on, how we cite them, and what we do when the evidence disagrees with itself. It applies to every article and review we publish.

Our Research Philosophy

Our starting position on every topic is the same: claims are unverified until checked, and the strength of our language must match the strength of the available evidence. We do not begin research to support a conclusion; we begin it to find out what the evidence actually says, including when the honest answer is that the evidence is limited, mixed, or insufficient to conclude anything. A page that overstates what is known fails our standard even if every individual fact on it is technically true.

How Information Is Researched Before Publication

Research for a review or article follows a consistent sequence. First, we document what is being claimed: by the manufacturer, by the marketing, and by common belief around the topic. Second, we search the independent literature for each substantive claim, starting with evidence syntheses and working outward. Third, we read safety and regulatory information from government agencies. Finally, we record what we could not find, because absent evidence shapes our conclusions as much as present evidence does. The goal is that a motivated reader, following our citations, could retrace the same path and check our reading.

The Hierarchy of Evidence We Follow

Not all studies deserve equal weight, and our writing reflects a standard evidence hierarchy:

  • Systematic reviews and meta-analyses, which aggregate and appraise all available studies on a question.
  • Randomized controlled trials, the strongest single-study design for questions of cause and effect.
  • Clinical guidelines from professional medical organizations, which translate bodies of evidence into practice recommendations.
  • Observational studies (cohort and case-control), useful for associations and long-term patterns but unable to prove causation on their own.
  • Small preliminary trials, mechanistic and animal research, which generate hypotheses rather than establish effects in people.
  • Expert opinion and traditional use, cited as context, never as proof.

Systematic reviews and meta-analyses sit at the top for a practical reason: individual studies frequently disagree, and a single positive trial can be an outlier, a fluke of small samples, or the product of bias. A well-conducted synthesis accounts for the full body of research, including the unflattering parts. When we cite a single study, we say so, and we do not present it as though it settled the question.

Preferred Sources

We prioritize sources that are independent of the products we cover and that publish their methods. In practice, that means:

  • PubMed / MEDLINE for peer-reviewed primary research and reviews.
  • The Cochrane Library for systematic reviews.
  • The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and its institutes, including the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health for supplement questions, plus MedlinePlus for consumer-level summaries.
  • Government and regulatory agencies: the FDA, the CDC, the World Health Organization, and guidance bodies such as NICE.
  • Professional medical organizations relevant to each topic (for example, dental, rheumatology, urology, and sleep medicine associations).
  • Academic medical centers with public health libraries, such as Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins Medicine, and Harvard Health.

We link to the specific page that supports a claim (a study, a fact sheet, a condition page) rather than to a homepage, so readers can verify the exact source of each statement.

How Sources Are Selected

Before a source is cited, we ask four questions. Is it independent of the product being discussed? Is it recent enough to reflect the current state of the evidence, or clearly identified as historical? Does it describe its methods, or at least cite research that does? And is it the most direct available source for the claim, rather than a secondhand summary of a summary? Sources that fail these questions are not cited, no matter how convenient their conclusions would be.

How Conflicting Evidence Is Handled

On many topics we cover, especially dietary supplements, studies genuinely disagree. Our policy is to report the disagreement rather than resolve it by selection. When evidence conflicts, we describe both sides, weight them by study quality and size rather than by publication date or headline appeal, note when positive findings come primarily from industry-funded research, and state plainly that results are mixed. Cherry-picking the favorable half of a split literature is one of the defining failures of product marketing, and refusing to do it is one of the defining standards of this site.

Older Studies and Newer Evidence

An older study is not automatically obsolete, and a newer one is not automatically correct. We evaluate age in context: foundational physiology rarely expires, while safety data, prevalence figures, and treatment standards can change quickly. When newer, larger, or better-designed research contradicts older findings, the newer evidence leads and the reversal itself is often worth reporting; the history of saw palmetto research, where decades of popularity dissolved under rigorous trials, is a standing reminder we cite deliberately. When a field has simply gone quiet, we say the literature is dated rather than pretending it is current.

Citation Standards

Our citations follow a small set of fixed rules. Links point to the specific supporting document, using descriptive anchor text that says what the source shows. Claims about ingredients, mechanisms, conditions, and safety are cited; matters of opinion are labeled as ours. We do not cite press releases, manufacturer blogs, or other affiliate websites as evidence. Informational citations are plain links; the only links that carry advertising disclosure attributes are affiliate links, which are always routed through our labeled /go/ paths and never disguised as references.

Manufacturer Information vs. Independent Evidence

Manufacturer materials have a legitimate but narrow role in our work: they are the authoritative source for what a product contains, what it costs, and what its refund terms are. They are never treated as evidence that the product works. Marketing claims, testimonials on sales pages, and manufacturer-summarized science are documented as claims and then checked against independent sources. When the only support for a claim is the company selling the product, our articles say exactly that.

Our Commitment to Scientific Accuracy

These standards exist so that our conclusions stay proportional to the evidence, no stronger and no weaker. When we learn that a cited source has been retracted, superseded, or corrected, we update the article and its conclusions. Readers who believe a citation does not support the claim attached to it are invited to say so; checking that kind of report is part of the job, not an interruption to it.
